Manglik Dosha, and the cancellation rules most apps skip

Manglik dosha, also called Mangal dosha or Kuja dosha, is one of the most talked about and most misunderstood ideas in match making. In its simplest form it describes a chart where Mars sits in certain houses. The trouble is that many tools stop there, flag someone as Manglik, and cause needless worry. The classical tradition is far more careful, and it includes a long list of conditions that cancel the dosha entirely.

Where Mars has to be

Mangal dosha is counted when Mars occupies the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house. Crucially, this is checked from two reference points, the lagna and the moon, and some traditions also check from Venus. A chart is only considered Manglik if Mars falls in one of those houses. Because Mars moves through the whole zodiac in about two years, this is common, which is one reason it should never be treated as alarming on its own.

Why it is checked

Mars is the planet of drive, heat and assertiveness. In the houses tied to marriage and home, an unbalanced Mars can add friction, impatience or intensity to a partnership. The tradition simply asks that this energy be understood and matched thoughtfully, not that anyone be excluded.

The cancellation rules

Here is what cheaper tools miss. The dosha is considered cancelled or greatly reduced in many situations: when Mars is in its own sign or exalted, when it sits with or is aspected by Jupiter or the Moon, when both partners are Manglik, when Mars is in the second house in certain signs, and several more classical exceptions. A responsible reading applies every one of these before drawing a conclusion. Very often a person flagged as Manglik is, after the rules are applied, effectively free of the dosha.
